I found this (flatering) article about that long lost piece by Hollindaze, aka Rhonda Olson!

"The standout piece for me was by Susanne Apgar. It was a well executed formal portrait of a smiling baby… a baby that one quickly realizes that despite giving the essence of an innocent, fresh faced baby, it is not really a baby at all. In fact, it’s not fully human. The child bears a tail where her legs should be. She cute and frightening, like the offspring of Angelina Jolie and Jabba the Hutt. It’s fascinating and repugnant all at once.
The mutated child reminds me of The Chrysalids, a novel in which deformity in humans has become so rampant that if one is discovered to have anything different about them, they were banished to the hinterlands."

It is the tradition of art to inspire, to validate, to question and to document.

In the weeks that followed the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001, artists who found their bearings contributed to Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition in an effort to reach out to their community.
A decade has passed, one of resilient spirit and fortitude. Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition,

a commemorative book produced by Co-Chair Wendy Popp, will help mark the 10th anniversary of one of the darkest periods in our country's history. The book is a reflection on the memorial exhibition that was held at the Museum of American Illustration in January, 2002. Artists of an international community responded with imagery that honored the heroism and humanity demonstrated by countless individuals in the wake of this tragedy.

The works within the pages are a selection from the original exhibit which then toured to such additional venues as the United Nations, The New-York Historical Society, The Huntington Museum and The Wethersfield Historical Society in 2002. Professionals in our industry such as Guy Billout, Cathie Bleck, Peter de Seve, Milton Glaser, Rudy Gutierrez, Frances Jetter, Viktor Koen, William Low, Barbara Nessim, and Tim O'Brien, to name a few, are represented within the 100 pages. Every artist and volunteer who participated has also been named in the book.

A copy of the commemorative book Prevailing Human Spirit, The Exhibition, will be available for the public to view at The Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators on September 13, 2011.

If you are interested in reserving a copy, please contact prevailinghumanspirit@gmail.com with your email address and information will be sent to you. Books will be available for purchase in the coming month.

This edition will be sold for $75.00 with proceeds going to funds supporting families still in recovery.

La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents their annual juried group exhibition, “Everything but the Kitschen Sync.” This gigantic, no-theme show features works from some of the freshest and most relevant artists working today. Commercial illustrators, graphic designers, tattooists, scenic painters, students, and animators and other have been invited to submit images. The show includes artists the gallery has previously exhibited, who consistently produce some of the most interesting paintings and sculptures in pop contemporary, as well as a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered, underground talent. This year’s list of 121 Kitschen Sync artists showing 225 pieces were chosen from over 8000 entries that were sent to the gallery throughout the year.

“Everything but the Kitschen Synch” began in October 1986 as the “Día de los Muertos” show which was entirely focused on the folk art, sculptures and imagery of Mexico’s “Day of the Dead” celebration. By 1995, gallery owner and curator Billy Shire felt the show had run its course and presented other themed group exhibitions such as the 1996 “21st Century Tiki Show” curated with Otto Von Stroheim. In 1998 Shire decided to present a non-themed show dedicated to illustrative and narrative artwork. As many local artists work in commercial graphic art fields such as illustration, cartooning, animation, ect, the show was named “Uncommercial Art by Commercial Artists.” In 2004, Shire changed the show name to the more encompassing and less-cumbersome “Everything but the Kitschen Synch.”

“Everyone looks at this show for new and interesting artists” states Shire – and indeed, not only does La Luz de Jesus pick artists from the Kitchen Synch for future smaller group and solo shows – numerous curators and owners of other galleries also keep their eyes on the yearly show for potential artists to add to their rosters.

“This is the only opportunity for emerging artists to show at the most prestigious gallery in post-pop and it is one of the most anticipated shows of the year because patrons get a crack at buying art from future superstars” states gallery director Matt Kennedy.

I guess I'm a little behind at updating my work. My website is almost 3 years old! Well it's getting done slowly...I hope to have a new site up soon. It will be more simple... minimal.

I will try to post more 'quickies' here on the blog (sketches and quick paintings as well as updates on any relevant 'artsy' stuff).
